Restorative Products Rust Converter: Questions and Answers

Application and Related Information

Q: How is Restorative Products Rust Converter applied?

A: Restorative Products Rust Converter can be applied using a brush, spray, sponge, or roller. Conventional paint application equipment works well.

Q: What type of coverage can be expected with Restorative Products Rust Converter?

A: Coverage depends on the amount of rust on the metal surface. Generally, one medium coat covers approximately 400 to 500 square feet per gallon on lightly rusted surfaces. If two coats are required, coverage will be around 200 to 300 square feet per gallon.

Q: What type of surface preparation is required before applying Restorative Products Rust Converter?

A: Clean the Surface: Remove any dirt, grease, oil, or contaminants using a suitable cleaner. A pressure washer or a mild detergent with water can be effective.  If using a detergent, be sure to rinse the surface with water ensuring no residue is left on the surface.

Remove Loose Rust and Debris: Use a wire brush, sandpaper, or a grinder to remove loose rust, flaky paint, and debris. This helps ensure good adhesion of the rust converter.

Q: How much dry time is required after applying Restorative Products Rust Converter before applying a topcoat?

A: Depending on conditions, Restorative Products Rust Converter should dry for a minimum of 12 hours (at low humidity and temperatures above 75°F) up to 24 hours (at high humidity or temperatures below 75°F).

Q: Can Restorative Products Rust Converter be used on damp surfaces?

A: No, allow the surface to dry fully before application.

Q: What type of topcoats are recommended?

A: Oil-Based Paints: These provide excellent adhesion and durability, ideal for metal surfaces.

Acrylic Paints: Fast-drying and easy to clean up, acrylics work well for interior and exterior applications.

Epoxy Coatings: Known for their strong adhesion and resistance to moisture, these are great for heavy-duty protection.

Polyurethane Finishes: These offer a tough, glossy finish that enhances durability and resistance to UV light and chemicals.

Rust-Inhibiting Paints: Specifically formulated to prevent future rust, these paints work well on surfaces previously treated with rust converter.

Always ensure the rust converter is fully cured before applying any topcoat for optimal results!

Q: What are the minimum and maximum temperatures for application?

A: Minimum application temperature of 55°F is recommended (both air and surface temperatures should be at least 55°F). The maximum recommended temperature is 100°F.

Q: What are the recommended cleaning procedures for Restorative Products Rust Converter?

A: Once dried, Restorative Products Rust Converter is difficult to remove. Clean brushes, rollers, trays, and spray equipment with cold tap water and mild detergent.

Q: Can Restorative Products Rust Converter be applied to surfaces that are part rust and part painted?

A: Yes, it can be applied over bare metal, rusted areas, and any tightly adhered primer or paint. When applied to rust the product will dry black, when applied to a painted surface it will dry clear. Rust particulates can move around on the surface during application causing the “black color” to bleed over onto the previously painted surface.

Q: Will Restorative Products Rust Converter work for applications requiring sub-zero temperature exposure after drying?

A: Yes, it remains effective at temperatures as low as -70°F.

Q: Will Restorative Products Rust Converter work if applied to surfaces subject to permanent water submersion?

A: No, we do not recommend using this product for objects that will be submerged in water for long periods of time. If you choose to use this product on this type of surface, we highly recommend a very durable and water resistant top coat.

Q: Can Restorative Products Rust Converter be used in saltwater applications?

A: Yes, after drying for 24 hours, apply a suitable topcoat.  Two applications of a suitable topcoat are recommended within 24 hours after the final coating.

Q: Will Restorative Products Rust Converter work on other types of metals such as galvanized metal, copper, or aluminum?

A: Yes, it will neutralize rust on galvanized metal. While it can be applied to aluminum or copper, there is no significant benefit; however, it will serve as a suitable primer for a topcoat.

Q: Will Restorative Products Rust Converter work as a stain remover, for example, on rust deposits on porcelain tile or brick?

A: No, it is not recommended for general rust stain removal on non-metal surfaces.
